The first 'word' that Romilly made/said was "Nan". I understand that that is very comment. She then managed the obligatory "Dad" which she has been splitting out for a while - sometimes you wonder if they are sounds or words, although the other day I did sit her on my knee and with her full attention said to her "Dad". She looked at me, concentrating and said it back to me - "dad". Of course it made my heart just melt.
Tonight whilst in the bath, Romilly has several bath toys which are farm yard animals, one of which is a Duck. Infact the 'duck' was the only animal that was actually in the bath - the others werent in having a swim, they were sitting on the side of the bath. So the duck was the lone animal floating around. Without warning, Romilly said "duck". It was an obvious 'duck' sound. I grabbed the floating duck - which she was focused on, and held it in front of her and said "duck!". She repeated "Duck!" And she kept saying it. I thought to myself.. this cant be,. I must be hearing things, so I called Annabelle in.
I again, said "duck!" and Romilly repeated it.. Annabelle was smitten.
So there you have it.. "duck" is the first word that wasnt prompted I guess. And there is no reason why she wouldnt have been able to say 'duck' - we tell her what each of the 'bath time' animals are, and a duck features in both of the books which Annabelle (and I) have been reading to her for the last 5 or so months.
