Its Just A Matter Of Fact

You know what I dont like? I dont like people who leave all of their shoes outside their front door - one pair is ok if they are only there temporarily. I live in a unit and I hate the idea that someone is using our stair well as an Extension of their closet.. a shoe closet at that..

Since Sunday one of my PC's have been playing up.. it all started when I installed my flat mates spare DVD+RW (how does someone manage to have a spare one of these?!).. anyway.. it wouldnt boot.. when I explored I had somehow lost my boot drive.. I assume I got a power surge.. or static.. anyway.. resorting to having to reinstall WinXP.. I found that it didnt want to happen.. it kept crashing whilst trying to copy from the CD. To cut a long story short.. it has taken me all afternoon Sunday, most of Tuesday night and then finally to night.. I worked out the new DVD is conflicting with my Network card (PCI - dunno how or why).. anyway, ripped out the network card, threw in a USB network adaptor and all systems are go!

Looking for some good free music.. check this 16 Neptunes from Quark Kent.

There are 3 whales in Sydney Harbor. this is quite rare and incredible.. they are well into the harbor as well, not just near the heads.. if I didnt have to work I would probably like to get down and have a look..

Calling All Vocalists

Last night Kev and I did some more work on the Interactive Particle Theory project. I think we have recorded all of the main themes of Tullsino's Orb - we still need to get a drum loop down and then fatten it out with some layers of sound to give it some depth. We really want to over produce this music, so that its not until the 20th time you listen to it that you hear "that bell" thats deep in the mix. I think its that sort of thing which makes people coming back to listen to more - apart from it being a good tune. Which I think it is.

After we have all of the layers sorted out it should just be a case of arranging it.. remember.. taking a non linear process and turning it into linear final product. We also spoke about doing some different mixes for the song.. which is very easy to do when you have sampled all of the riffs digitally.

We also managed to capture the chord structure for a track called Crusanda. This one wont be an instrumental. We need a vocalist..

Straight Lines

Why is it that when you go to get a hair cut the person cutting you hair waits until they have a pair of clippers buzzing away next to your ear before they ask you questions.

Hairdresser: So.. how's buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz?
Me: Im sorry I couldnt hear you..
Hairdresser: Oh, I said.. how's buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz?
Me: [hmphf] Not bad thanks and you?

Its the same with the dentist.. why does he wait until he has every instrument known to mankind hanging out of your mouth before he asks you questions.. what gives? Cant he see that you have everything bar the dam spit bowl half in your mouth and he expects you to talk to him.. and apart from that he has probably injected enough meddazaline into your mouth to kill 5 horse, so it feels like one side of your face is sitting on your lap anyway..

But back to the hairdresser.. why do they want to talk to me anyway.. I think you either fall into 2 categories.. those who like to chat to hairdressers and those who dont. I am definitely the dont talk type of person. I go to get my hair cut at the cheapest establishment in town.. Im not there for the conversation.. hurry up cut it let me out.. I have other things I need to do.. this hair cutting business is just a chore lets face it..

Movie Movies Movies

Tania came over last night and we watched to two really good movies .. well we watched 1, and I watched 2 :) The first was Amelie - which was fantastic.. if you havent seen this movie then see it.. its a french movie and I will admit I dont like watching sub titled movies and I generally try to avoid it at all costs (or just change the audio channel on the DVD).. but I didnt.. I put up with the subtitles and Im glad.. great script, the acting was superb and most of all the direction was top notch.. this would have to be my pick of the year so far..

The other movie, was Lantana, its an Australian movie, and again I will admit I dont normally like watching Australian movies because most of them end up being very corny whilst trying to be funny (take Muriels wedding, the castle.. ) but this movie isnt funny at all.. its a very serious film.. all I will say is that its more then your average "who done it".. again, great script, and great cast - all round..

Other movies I have recently seen which I liked also were Minority Report... liked it for what it was - sure its a Tom Cruise film.. and really I dont mind that.. but it had a good concept.. another who done it.. and it tackled the whole paradox of seeing the future and being able to change it very well. Some nice twists and turns..

Bend it like Beckham - well worth the look.. I was very impressed. I didnt expect much from this one and walked away loving it..

Space To Let - Apply Here

Had lunch with Kev today and I mentioned how amusing I found it that one of the members of a boy band - I cant remember which - is going to be the next person to visit MIR courtesy of the Russian Space Agency. Kev also saw some humor in this and said "now theres a trip he wouldnt have booked via flight centre!".

Our space discussion then moved onto me mentioning the guy who wants yo hot air balloon up to the inner limits of the atmosphere and then parachute back down.. we wondered if he would be able to manage to land on the ground or if he would end up in the ocean.. I laughed remembering that when I read this story in the paper, they had a diagram of where he expected to land, and it was an area pretty much the size of texas.

Not having finished our space discussion we then talked about the fact that the atmosphere is only 200 or so miles above the earth. Not very far really.. infact you can drive your car that distance in 3 hours.. (less if you disobey the road rules - not that I would do that.. regardless of what my 8 yo niece erin says). Kev mentioned what if they got a ladder long enough, they could just drop it down from the space shuttle and people could go up and down that way - good one Kev!

Quick Bits: : Last night on TV.. "Scientists have found that radiation from mobile telephones create tumors in mice - I want to know who is ringing the mice?!"

Dreaming Of Horses

Normally I dont remember my dreams.. its not that I dont dream.. because Im sure I do. I have been accused of *singing* in my sleep (go figure.. Im sure I was told that as part of some weird conspiracy) - although I dont remember that either.

But today when I was driving to my parents place I noticed a horse in a paddock and this made me remember the dream I had last night. It was a strange dream in the sense that it was about a horse but this horse had the characteristics of a dog!

In my "horse" dream I was petting the horse and playing with it like I would one of my dogs*, rolling on the ground with it and it was licking me on the face and following me around like a puppy. I dont know the significance of this dream or what it means.. I found it odd that I remembered it though.. I should check a dream site out..

* - I dont have any dogs anymore.. but have always been a dog lover and had them around in my family..

Also on the way to my parents place , I remember a time a few weeks ago when my 8 yo niece, erin, and I were playing "eye spy" on a similar drive. She said that she spied with her little eye something beginning with "s". I spent a good 15 minutes trying to work out what it was.. it ended with the following conversation:

me: "heck I dont know.. give me a clue"
erin: "its a verb - its something you do" [something I do.. here is my 8 yo niece explaining to me what a "verb" is.. god love her.. plus a verb.. heck there isnt much I was going to be doing - I was driving the car.. ]
me: [thinking.. verb].. "seeing?, spying?"
erin:"nope" [that giggle that only 8 yo nieces can do]
me:"heck I don't know.. am I doing it now?"
erin:"umm.." [looking] "I dont know.. "
me:"hfmf"
erin: [looking some more] "uncle rob! yeah you are doing it now.. "
me: [confused] "I dont know - I give up!"
erin:"speeding!" [grin]
me: [little rascal!]

Old Habits Die Hard

Fact : at my age, I have not yet mastered the formula for ensuring a perfect tie every time. I have got it down to 2 attempts though.

Is this an observation in what we learn over the course of our lives? Isnt this an art I should have mastered at this point in my life? Or is it just one of lifes little mysteries?

Oh no.. I did it again.. left sock left shoe, right sock.. damn it! What does fate have in store for me now..

8.07pm Now I love my reality TV as much as the next person does.. and I will admit that during BigBrother I was glued to the TV.. but this Celebrity BigBrother is the biggest load of crap on TV.. I cant imagine anyone watching it..

Did you know that punctuation (and spelling) are optional - they are just a suggestion after all.. I wonder if that makes my primary school teacher (Mrs Vangergraf) turn in her grave. Oh gosh.. I hope she is dead.. I mean.. I dont hope she is dead.. but I would hate to suggest someone is deceased when they are not.. maybe I should just delete all of that.

11.48pm I have added the for the eyes link. its late.. I should be in bed..

Tie Me Down

On the train, going to work this morning, I saw a little boy attempting to put his tie on for school. He would have been about 9 or 10 years old. His first attempt resulted in his tie being too long, so he started again. His second attempt resulted in it being too short. I chuckled to myself in silence - remembering my times as a school boy doing the same things. On his third attempt there was success.

Im sure there is some mathematical equation that tells you where you commence your first loop which ensures that the tie is the perfect length every time. This is a science though - its not some simple arithmetic. Of course the formula would be directly proportional to the type of knot you were attempting.

Monday Monday

Wake up! Wake up! .. no.. Didnt want to wake up.. Its Monday..
Get to work, elevators dont work.. Its Monday.. I make a coffee - over the weekend someone has replaced my milk with yogurt. its Monday.. I almost slip over on the floor in the bath room.. its Monday..

I was meant to go to Kev's tonight to do some more work with the Interactive Particle Theory. Too tired.. its Monday..

My flat mate showed me an advert from a leading bank which had a spitting image picture of a friend of mine.. I must remember to scan it and send it to him.. which reminds me, Rusty sent me this link - you want reality TV - look at this.. nasubi..

ears : retro [headless chickens]

advice : look both ways before you cross the road

9.28pm oh no.. I missed the secret life of us.. it really is Monday isnt it?

We'll Have Naan Of That

Today I attempted to cook Garlic Naan bread. This is something I try to do every 6 months or so. There is a very good reason I only attempt it twice a year. Wonder if I will try again in January - or I will I simply know better next time.

Oh and btw - dont mess with your routine.. I knew I should never have put my right sock on first - what was I thinking. If life is like traveling down a freeway.. then someone just pulled on my hand break and Im now facing the wrong way..

Superstitious Routines

Do you believe in superstitions? I don't - but then again there are lots of little things which I do, though not really being aware that I do them - which form part of my routine. Can a routine be a routine if you dont know that it is one? Socks.

My left sock always goes on first, and my left shoe always goes on before the right one - but not before my right sock. So its left sock, right sock, left shoe, right shoe. Thats the way it always is - except for today. I tempted fate.. it was my right sock first.. hmm..

To flush or not to flush this is the question.. when you stay at someones house and you have to get up in the middle of the night to .. well you know.. [wee]. Is it etiquette to flush there and then and run the risk of waking the household, or is it accepted that you dont flush.. it gets flushed in the morning.. stale urine and all.. why isnt that one in the instruction manual?

Sweet Taste Of Rejection

It doesnt matter how it is put - if its "Fcuk off I dont want to see you again" or if its "I want you to know that this just isnt working" - its still rejection. It doesnt matter how you dress it up, if it is hidden in rose petals or delivered with a serving with strawberries and cream - its still rejection. It cuts as deep, the message is the same.

People say it happens to every one, we shouldnt take it personally. I dont get that.. how can you not take rejection personally? It is directly about you.

Tip #1 - dont listen to the Smiths when you are feeling down..

btw happy birthday to my dad..

Work Begins

It finally begins.. after many months of deliberation, I have begun work on my new and improved web site. Not knowing much at all apart from the basics of html editing - I'm sure this is going to be a slow and challenging process.

I have decided to go for the stylish approach - ok make that easy approach - nothing fancy here.. just the raw basics. Inspiration has come from a variety of websites - too many to mention. After spending several hours, days, weeks of looking at what other geeks have done online - I would like to thank them all for planting seeds in my brain. Whilst I have not intentionally set out to rip someone elses site off - its fair to say that I have been guided by those that I have liked the best.. so if you see a part of your little world in the arena.. then remember imitation is the best form of flattery.

Just don't expect anything to work right now..infact at the moment.. what you see if what you get.. none of the links here work, some of the links there may work.. I'm still building this site.. remember, the building has to be built before you can put your sofa in it. - which reminds me, why dont they call a building a "built" after it is completed?

So lets consider this site sofa-less atm.

The Scream

Had lunch with Eden and Kev today. We threw around some ideas for this years tropfest. After alot of deliberation, we have settled on a horror/suspense film idea. Working title of "the scream."

It centres around the idea of alot of evil/bad things happening in this area - town. The bad things are all a result of the death of a man. The area is so evil and bad that it has caused all of the evil to warp time, and the events which lead up to his death are in actual fact a direct result of his death. Its a difficult concept - and its going to be even harder to get it across in a 7 minute film.. but as they say thats part of the challenge..

Next step.. nut out the script.. we have set Eden - the chief writer 4 weeks to get the first draft to us.. stay tuned..

Trust The Process

Last night we commenced work on the Interactive Particle Theory's first song, called Tullsino's Orb. Want to know how it was recorded - then read on..

With a view to recording Interactive Particle Theory's (IPT) music completely digitally, I converted an old Pentium 333 fitted with a 3.5 Gig and various removable HDD's and an old 2xCDR into our now "recording studio".

Switching between the line in are a Yamaha DX7 keyboard and an Alesis drum machine, line out goes to a Fender Pro amp.

Sound is captured to disk using Cool Edit Pro and then edited and trimmed to riff and sample size - amplification is adjusted, as is any reverb or other effects before it is finally saved as a sampled WAV.

The majority of samples and riffs are captured live via the DX7.

Samples are arranged into ACID3 and the format of the song is created and arranged from there.

Drum loops are created and exported using Fruity Loops - although we havent really ventured into that arena yet.

Recording this way allows us to create what is essentially a linear product (all songs start, have an intro, verse, bridge, chorus, middle 8 and coda in a specific order - arrangement) in a non linear format.

Ever tried to paint a song? Now you get the idea.. The first notes had been played and fell together to form the tune called "Tullsino's Orb"..

Taking direct inspiration from the cold yet polished German achitechure.. autobahns, lamp posts, 1920's style.. add a sharp keyboard Riff and throw in a few layers of deep keyboards to add depth.. you have the workings of Tullsino's Orb.

Still early in development, we have written the main riff which will feature throughout the songs and also recorded either the middle 8 or a bridge.

Playing with drum loops we also captured a Drum and Bass loop which, whilst will not feature as part of Tullsino's Orb, is sure to be the basis of a future tune..

Not bad for 2-3 hours on a cold Monday Night..

The Interactive Particle Theory

What would happen if Kraftwerk took a detour in the 1980's, crossed itself with Talk Talk, with a splash of Duran Duran and Propaganda throw in for good measure and then got hooked on Bass and Drums and all things electrica and ended up in the year 2025? You would have the Interactive Particle Theory..

Interactive Particle Theory are part of the Experimental Music Unit or EMU for short. Central to EMU are myself and Kevin Cooper. Under the guise of EMU, we write and produce music for ITP and other pseudonyms.

ArC is also a product of EMU and features the trio of myself, kev and another friend as vocalist/guitarist.

Sounds complex and convoluted? Not really.. EMU is the parent reservoir of all of our musical ideas and concepts.. it is the melting pot of where we throw everything into and develop material/music from. From there the song or product will become part of one of our musical projects, be it Interactive Particle Theory, ARC or some new act.

And so it was, Interactive Particle Theory was born on 15 July 2002. Stemming from the concept of a virtual band in a working transcript set in the future of Sydney. The music of ITP can best be described as kraftwerk in the year 2025..

end. [technically its the beginning you know]
